EL PASO - Senior libero Stephanie Figueroa was honored for her performance in the classroom as well as in the court, as she was named to the 2011 Conference USA All-Academic Volleyball Team, the league announced Tuesday.
Five seniors and six juniors have been named to the all-academic team, as selected by the league’s Sports Information Directors. The squad consist of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a start or key reserve on their team.
Figueroa, who earns her first C-USA All-Academic recognition and is the third Miner in program history to earn all-academic honors, also sports a flawless 4.0 GPA in multidisciplinary studies. The libero ranks fifth in the conference in digs with 4.78 per set and has posted double-digit dig performances in 29 of 32 contest this season. Figueroa ranks first in the league in service aces with 0.36 per set. She was a C-USA Academic Medalist in 2010 and has been named C-USA Player of the Week twice this season and four times during her career.
The Puerto Rican native was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District® 7 first team earlier this month and was the first Miner in program history to earn the honor.
The senior will be playing in her final match in a UTEP uniform today as the Miners take on UCF at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
