Volleyball Signs Two for 2010

Nov. 11, 2009

EL PASO – UTEP head coach Ken Murphy announced the addition of Taylor Nix and Jacqueline Cason to the Miners' volleyball squad on Wednesday.

Cason signed a national letter of intent to join the Miners in the fall, Nix will come to UTEP in January following the fall semester.

“This is a very exciting day for us,” Murphy said. “We’ve added two student-athletes that will make a huge impact on our program while complementing our current players perfectly.

“Jacquie and Taylor fit exactly into the ideals that we are establishing in our program in terms of character and athletic ability. They are both very physical athletes with great skill sets who play the game intelligently, aggressively, and with a team-first mentality.”

Cason, a 6-2 outside hitter, is a 2009 Tucson Citizen Division 4A-1 First Team selection. Coached by Heather Mott, Cason led Cienega High School to three consecutive state playoff appearances from 2007-09. She averaged 3.5 kills per game during her senior season for a .419 hitting percentage and led Southern Arizona in service aces to rank top ten statewide. Cason was named a Prepvolleyball.com Senior Ace and to the AVCA Senior Watch List.

“Jacquie is a tall, powerful athlete that I really believe will be a dominant presence on the court for us,” Murphy said of Cason. “She is a great blocker so she immediately plays to one of the strengths of our team. She also attacks the ball at a high point with great power from both the front and back row.

“We think Jacquie is an ideal opposite for us, but she definitely has the flexibility as an athlete to play several positions. She has the ability to learn and process information quickly and the urgency to be a great player so I wouldn’t be surprised to see her on the court for us very soon.”

Cason played club for the Chandler Spiral under the direction of Pat Mooney and Molly Stark aiding the team to a fifth-place finish at the 2009 Junior Olympics.

Nix is a six-foot outside hitter from Gatesville, Texas. A two-time Crawford High School volleyball MVP, Nix led the Pirates to two district championships. The 2008 TGCA All-State selection, Nix was also named a TSWA All-State Honorable Mention and picked up district MVP recognition in 2007 and 2008.

“Taylor is an ideal outside hitter for our system,” Murphy said of Nix. “She is very powerful and already has the ability to terminate in a variety of ways. She also has the ability to ball control and defend so we see her developing into a great all-around player.

“Furthermore, Taylor is a tough competitor who adds some intangibles like intensity and fearlessness to our team. She will start school here in January (2010) so we see her being ready to compete for a spot as soon as next fall.”

She was the Waco Tribune Super Center Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore in 2007 and was named to the 2008 Waco Tribune First Team.

The three-sport athlete lettered in basketball and track as a freshman. Nix was named to the TGCA All-State basketball team during her sophomore and junior campaigns.

Nix played club volleyball with the Waco Juniors.
