EL PASO - UTEP volleyball's Stephanie Figueroa was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week announced league officials Monday.

This is the first honor for Figueroa and the second for UTEP in consecutive seasons. Senior DS Jennifer Nolasco was awarded the prize in 2009.

Figueroa guided the Miners to a 2-0 start in Conference USA as UTEP swept East Carolina. She anchored a strong defensive unit by registering 6.33 digs per set, including a mark of 7.65 on Saturday. Overall the junior transfer tallied 23 digs, which was her second-best effort on the year.

Sunday's 15-dig effort marked the 10th time that the junior transfer reached doubles digits in digs. Figueroa was also flawless in receptions as she cleanly handled 23 attempts on serve.

A Puerto Rican native, Figueroa now is recording 3.92 digs per set in 2010.
