Miners Take on Conference Opponent UCF

UTEP dropped their first C-USA match of the season against Tulane, 3-1. The Miners then went on to split the weekend falling to Baylor before recovering and securing a win against Binghamton, 3-0. Setter Malia Patterson earned a spot in the Kathy Trosclair Memorial All-Tournament team after registering her fourth double-double of the season with 36 assists and 12 digs against the Green Wave.
UCF Scouting Report
Series: The UTEP volleyball team fell to UCF 3-0 in 2011 in their final match of the season. Bridget Logan led the team with seven kills and posted a .214 hitting percentage. Xitlali Herrera registered six kills, seven digs, and three block assists. The Miners posted seven team blocks and 39 digs but fell short against the Knights.
UCF is led by DeLaina Sarden, who is ranked sixth in C-USA in hitting percentage with a .325. The sophomore leads the team in blocks with 25 (4s/21a). Angelica Crump is also a C-USA leader checking in at 15th in kills per set (3.07).
Southern Miss Scouting Report
Series: Last season, UTEP fell short to USM, 3-0. Jacquline Cason led the Miners attack with a team-high 12 kills and registered a .417 hitting efficiency. Teammate Xitali Herrera recorded a match-best five block assists and added 11 kills. Miners hit .237 for the match, while the Golden Eagles hit a .248 to outlast UTEP.
Golden Eagles Notables
Lydia Bonner leads the Golden Eagles in kills with 103 and a .240 hitting percentage. The freshman is ranked eight in C-USA averaging 3.81 kills per set. Elizabeth Rinaudo guides USM defense with a total of 125 digs ranking her third in C-USA. The Golden Eagles check in third in conference for hitting percentage (.213), assists (12.49) and kills (13.27).
Miners in the Rankings
The Miners are currently ranked second in Conference USA in hitting percentage (.213), second in blocks per set (2.37), fourth in kills per set (13.21) and assists per set (12.49). The squad has compiled an impressive 568 kills, 517 assists, 102 blocks (20s/164a) and 45 aces.
Nationally, UTEP is ranked 70th in blocks and 81st in hitting percentage.
Horton Moving Up the Charts
Jeane Horton is one of two Conference USA players ranked in the top-25 in the nation for kills per set. The junior has recorded a stellar 188 kills, 23 blocks (3s/20a), 32 digs and .330 hitting percentage. The outside hitter checks in at 21st in the nation averaging 4.37 kills per set. Horton continues to climb the charts this season after changing from middle blocker to outside hitter last season. The Fresno, Calif. native opened the season tallying three All-Tournament team selections. Previously, Horton registered a .567 hitting efficiency against Fresno State (8/24), setting the school standard in hitting percentage in five sets.
Patterson Makes it a Double
Malia Patterson has shown to be a force not only as a setter but her defensive strives have proven to be effective as well in 2012. The junior has executed four double-doubles this season. The setter recorded 36 assists and 12 digs against Tulane (9/13) earning a spot in the Kathy Trosclair Memorial All-Tournament team. Patterson ranks third in the league and 69th nationally averaging 10.40 assists per set. The junior is also second on the squad for digs with 109.
Xitlali Herrera is known for being a force at the net. The junior is ranked ninth in C-USA for blocks averaging 0.98. Herrera is second on the team in kills (121) and blocks 42 (5s/37a) and third in digs (105). the middle blocker earned her first Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honor (9/10) after posting a stellar showing against Houston Baptist (9/8) posting her first double-double of the season with 11 digs and 13 kills. The junior hammered a season-best 20 kills, five block assists, six digs and registered a .485 hitting percentage versus Arkansas (9/8).
Horton Commands the Miners Attack
Jeane Horton is off to a great start in 2012 earning top spots in Conference USA rankings. The junior has registered double-digit kill performances in 11 of the 12 matches, including a season-best 21 versus Arizona State (8/25). Horton has moved up the conference poll checking in at No, 2 in kills per set (4.37), The outside hitter is the only player in the league to ranked in the top five for both hitting percentage (.330-4th) and kills per set.

UTEP's frontcourt is dominating defensively through 12 matches in 2012. The squad continues to move up the charts, ranking second in blocks per set in Conference USA and 70th nationally (2.37). In fact, the Miners are the only school in the league to place two players in the top 10 of the category. Senior Cassandra Burruel is ranked fourth in the league and 72nd nationally averaging 1.21 blocks per set, while Xitlali Herrera is ninth at .98. The Orange and Blue are known for defensive prowess. Since Ken Murphy's arrival, the Miners have averaged 2.26 blocks per frame compared with 1.9 in the five years prior. Additionally, UTEP has strung together three straight top-80 finishes nationally.
Burruel for the Block
Cassandra Burruel is making a name for herself in 2012. The senior leads the Miners in blocks averaging 1.21. The middle blocker is ranked fourth in the conference with a total of 52 blocks (7s/45a). Burruel has also tallied a total of 66 kills this season. The senior registered six blocks (2s/4a) against Binghamton (9/15) and added six kills.
Return of Conference Tournament
After a two-year hiatus, the Conference USA Championship makes a return appearance. Tulsa will serve as host of the tournament on Nov. 16-18 at the Reynolds Center. This season the Miners will play four tournaments and 16 conference matches. The top teams will square off in the Conference USA tournament for a chance to become the C-USA Champions.
