El Paso - The UTEP volleyball team wrapped up the UTEP Invitational with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-17) victory over the Texas Southern Jaguars at Memorial Gym Saturday afternoon.

The Miners (2-4) were led by standout, Xitlali Herrera who earned her second double- double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs. Setter Malia Patterson set the tempo for the Miners with 36 assists while outside hitters Taylor Nix and Talia Jones delivered nine kills each.

The Orange and Blue finished the match with a total of 43 kills compared to 23 by the Jaguars (0-5) while also an advantage in assists (41-22).

UTEP started strong in the first set, with a trio of Miner kills sparking a 4-0 run before a service ace by Dayana Acevedo brought the score, 6-1. The Miners increased their edge by capitalizing off of two TCU errors helping a second 4-0 run. Consecutive kills by Nixon and Lindsey Larson made it 12-4.

A 7-0 run fueled the Miners on the scoreboard and brought them two points away from winning the set at 23-13. Herrera sealed the victory for the Miners with back-to-back kills to end the set.

The Orange and Blue carried over their momentum into the second set, using kills by Jones and Herrera and a TSU error to make it 3-0. The Tigers countered with three straight kills but then they made an error to put the Miners back into rhythm. Nix then delivered a kill followed by an ace by Jones (8-3).

Points went back and forth between teams but the Miners kept their lead and went on a 4-0 run to capture the second set.

Still in the game, the Tigers put up the first point in the third set. However, much like the first two sets the Miners took control of the game, with a 5-0 run to bring the score to 7-4. After trading some points, another 5-0 increased the Miners' edge to 14-7. Herrera and Jones both delivered a pair of kills during the surge.

Closing out the third set was Herrera and Jones, once again contributing a pair of kills. The Miners wrapped up their second victory on the year by taking the final set against the Tigers, 25-17.

Herrera and Victoria Valencia were both named to the UTEP Invitational All-Tournament team.

UTEP will travel to Massachusetts on Friday, Sept. 13 in a 1 p.m. matchup with Niagara and a 5 p.m. match against Rhode Island in the Art Carmicheal Invitational.
