HOUSTON, Texas - The UTEP volleyball team improved to 5-1 on Friday, defeating Louisiana-Monroe, 4-1 (30-16, 31-33, 30-28, 30-18) and sweeping Prairie View A&M 3-0 (30-16, 30-15, 30-16) in the Texas Southern Volleyball Tournament in Houston, Texas.

Amy Sanders led the Miners with 20 kills and posted a team-high six aces. Christie Murphy averaged 3.17 kills per game while Catherine Chavez combined for 16 digs.

Murphy hit .824 against Prairie View, tying the school record for hitting percentage in a three-game match. The senior outside hitter went 14-for-17 with no errors against the Panthers.

In the first match, the Warhawks rose above the Miners in kills (51-43), assists (39-33) and blocks (4-3) but it was the Miners who produced, recording a .295 efficiency to ULM's .197. The Miners also laced 14 aces while posting 34 digs for the match.

UTEP was swift in the first game, opening with a 5-0 scoring drive to secure the lead and the win, 30-16.

Despite out hitting ULM .345 to .250, the Miners registered just 13 kills to the Warhawks' 20 to fall in the second frame, 33-31.

The Miners trailed in Game 3 until Sanders and Daidre Mendenhall posted back-to-back kills giving the Miners a 17-16 lead. ULM remained close, but another kill by Sanders, followed by a kill by Chavez and an ace by Patty Jarmoc boosted the Miners to a 30-28 win.

The Miners' continued with their momentum to win the third game 30-18.

UTEP's offense was explosive versus PVAMU, as UTEP hit above the .500 for all three games in the sweep, including .577 in the third game. The Miners slammed 53 kills for the match, more than doubling that of the Panthers (23). The Orange and Blue held Prairie View to hitting just .052.

The Miners will face Mississippi Valley State in their final match of the tournament. First serve is slated for 9:00 a.m. CST. .
