EL PASO, Texas - UTEP head volleyball coach Ken Murphy has announced the addition of Eastwood High School standout Ashley Mullens to the 2009 signing class.
"We're very excited to have Ashley join our team," Murphy said. "For a while we've felt like she was the best libero coming out of El Paso this year. She's familiar with our team's system and I would not be surprised if she becomes an immediate contributor to our team.
"Ashley is a good competitor, a good student and is determined to be a great player at UTEP. She possesses all qualities that we value in a student-athlete."
The El Paso native was a three-year varsity letterwinner under the Troopers head coach Vanessa Strange. Mullens played club with the El Paso Sunspots from 2004 to 2009 leading her teams to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior Olympic Championships in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
An all-around player while at Eastwood, Mullens joins the Miners as a defensive specialist and plans to enroll in a pre-medicine program at UTEP.
A 2009 All-State Academic Team honoree, Mullens will graduate in the top ten percent of her class next week. Ashley is the daughter of Dwight and Isabel Mullens.
