EL PASO, Texas - UTEP volleyball head coach Ken Murphy has announced the schedule for the 2009 season. The schedule includes four tournaments and 13 matches at Memorial Gym including the season opener Sun Bowl Invitational on Aug. 28-29.
Texas Southern, Norfolk State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi will make their way to the Sun City as the Miners host the Fifth Annual Sun Bowl Volleyball Invitational. UTEP will then head to Tempe, Ariz., for the Arizona State Tournament, the first of two tournaments in the Grand Canyon State.
The Miners will leave the southwest for Peoria, Ill., to participate in the Bradley Braves Tournament on Sept. 11-12, and will return to Arizona to close out tournament season at the Arizona Invitational in Tucson.
The first installment of the I-10 Rivalry is set for Sept. 8 at NMSU, the Aggies will make the trip to El Paso for the second round on Sept. 22.
“Our 2009 non-conference schedule presents many different challenges against a range of opponents,” Murphy said. “I think our team will be prepared to play at a high level and compete against the best that our conference has to offer.”
UTEP will kick off league competition with a home meeting against the 2008 Conference USA regular season and conference tournament champions Tulane on Sept. 17.
The Sept. 22 date against NMSU opens up a three-match homestand that brings league foes SMU and Tulsa to Memorial Gym on Sept. 25 and 27, respectively.
The Miners will begin the month of October with a weekend in Houston to face the Rice Owls, Oct. 2, and the Houston Cougars, Oct. 4.
UTEP will host UCF and Southern Miss the following week and will also face Memphis, UAB and Houston at Memorial Gym before closing out the home schedule against Rice on Nov. 8. Road games will include trips to Tulsa, SMU and the east coast for matches against ECU and Marshall.
A trip to the Big Easy will conclude the regular season for the Miners on Nov. 14. This year’s Conference USA Championships are set for Nov. 19-22 in Houston.
