March 7, 2013
El Paso – Sarah Miranda Villa, a libero from Burges High School, has signed to play volleyball for UTEP.
“We are really excited about Sarah joining our program next fall,” said head coach Ken Murphy. “She is a talented player but just as importantly she is a great competitor. When you watch her play you can tell how much she enjoys playing the game and challenges herself to get better.”
Villa has proven to be a threat in the backcourt registering seven 30 or more dig performances during her 2012 campaign. The libero posted a career-high 57 digs and averaged 11.4 digs per set against Eastwood (8/28). Villa received 2012 Class 4A All-State honors for the second straight season after collecting a total of 881 digs for the Mustangs. Her efforts also earned her the 2012 All-City Defensive Player of the Year and the All-District 1-4A Outstanding Defensive Specialist. Villa helped Burgers reclaim the Bi-District title racking up 43 digs against Canutillo (10/30).
In 2011, The El Paso native had a stellar season recording a city-best 987 digs and averaged 7.3 digs per set. As a junior, Villa contributed 12 contests with 30-plus dig performances, including a season best of 55 against Irving (10/16). The libero was named to the All-State First Team, All-City First Team and All-District Outstanding Libero after anchoring Burges defense to a second-round playoff appearance.
“I think she will add a spark to our team and could contribute soon,” said Murphy.
Villa currently plays for APAC volleyball under former Miner Catherine Chavez.
