St. Mary's College Tops UTEP, 3-0
Nov. 29, 2013
Moraga, Calif. – The UTEP volleyball team falls to the St. Mary’s Gaels, 3-0 (18-25, 18-25, 17-25) on Friday.
UTEP (14-15, 7-7 C-USA) was led by Malia Patterson as she posted 31 assists and a hitting percentage of .833. Talia Jones followed with a .417 hitting percentage as she secured 10 kills with zero errors.
The Miners took a 3-1 lead at the start of the first set but two UTEP errors sparked an 8-2 run for the Gaels. UTEP would only commit one more error in the set but the Miners’ precision would not be able to cut St. Mary’s lead.
Still in the game, the Orange and Blue set off the second set with a 4-0 run, but St. Mary’s stayed close behind. The Gaels would tie the score at 9, and take the lead with a 4-1 run. Maintaining its lead St. Mary’s would capture the second set.
In the third set, UTEP improved its hitting percentage to a .300 but it wasn’t enough to keep St. Mary’s from stealing the final set and the match.
The UTEP volleyball team will wrap up its 2013 season with a match against Pacific University at 8:30 p.m. (MT) in Stockton, Calif. on Saturday.
