EL PASO - Three Miners posted double-figure kills as the UTEP volleyball team upset Houston, 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 15-13) on Sunday in Memorial Gym.

Jeane Horton and Xitlali Herrera each recorded career-highs, hammering 25 and 20 kills, respectively. Horton also contributed four blocks in the contest while Herrera added nine digs, three blocks and an ace.

Marie-Therese Joyce also registered double-figures in kills with 11 and put up a match-best, seven net stops. Stephanie Figueroa tallied 20 digs and Rachel Scott served up a team-best three aces.

The Miners showed resilience, bouncing back from a 2-1 deficit to capture the final two frames for the victory. The squad has played in seven five-set contests in 2011 and are 5-2 in those matches on the season.

UTEP (17-9, 7-6 C-USA) pounded 71 kills to the Cougars' 57 and hit a stellar .316 for the match, including a .414 clip in the fourth stanza to take the easy 25-16 win.

The Miners surged to a 10-4 advantage in the fifth set, capitalizing on the Cougars' unforced errors. Houston (16-7, 9-4 C-USA) was able to cut the lead to 13-12, but a UTEP timeout put Houston to rest and the Miners held on for the victory.

UTEP looks to keep the momentum rolling, when it heads to UAB for a two-match road trip against the Blazers on Nov. 5th and 6th. The Miners return home Nov. 11 and 13 to face Marshall and ECU, respectively.
