EL PASO - The UTEP volleyball team (16-8, 6-5) went down to the wire before pulling out a five-set victory over Tulane, defeating the Green Wave, 3-2 (25-19, 25-15, 21-25, 17-25, 15-13). Sophomore Jeane Horton set a career-high 22 kills and recorded a .500 hitting percentage in the win. Herrera put together her ninth double-double of the season with 15 digs and 12 kills.

Sophomore Malia Patterson posted a match-high 50 assists, while Bridget Logan pounded 15 kills, two service aces and two block assists.

The Miner attack did not stop with the trio of Herrera, Horton and Logan leading the way. UTEP hit a .315 hitting percentage, holding the Green Wave to a .268 clip.

For the second consecutive match, the Miners got off to a slow start in the opening set and fell behind 2-8. But UTEP regrouped and put together a five-point rally on the strength of kills by Horton and a trio of Tulane attack errors, tied the set 8-8. The two teams swapped points until back-to-back Green Wave errors gave the Miners a 19-15 lead, forcing a Tulane timeout. Both teams continues to battle for control but UTEP did not relent with a block by Jacqueline Cason and a pair of kills by Cassandra Burruel gave the Miners a 25-19 victory.

UTEP took early control of the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. The Miners extended the lead and put together a four-point push with a pair of kills from Horton, a service ace and a kill from Herrera, giving UTEP a 19-12 lead and forcing a Green Wave timeout. The Miners were unstoppable, pulling together another string of points with a kill by Marie-Therese Joyce and a service ace by Stephanie Figueroa taking a 24-14 lead. Bridget Logan hammered the ball home to seal the set for UTEP, 25-15.  


 

 

In a closely contested third set, UTEP again used the serve of Logan to gain control of the set, 5-4. A service error by Milica Jovic tied the set at 11-11 but the Miners answered back with a 4-2 run. The Green Wave rallied back, knotting the set at 19-19. A kill by Azarri Badawi gave Tulane a 22-20 lead. The Green Wave was able to get another point off a kill by Cori Martone and a block by Anna Wruck gave Tulane a 25-21 victory. 

Tulane established itself early in the fourth stanza, as the Green Wave surged to a 10-6 lead. Down 9-11, UTEP chipped away at the deficit to come within one at, 11-12. But the Green Wave was able to ride a 7-1 surf to go ahead 24-16. Tulane held on to the lead and a kill by Martone gave the Green Wave a 25-17 victory.

UTEP came out swinging in the final set taking a 3-1 lead with a kill by Logan. UTEP surged on a 4-1 run with a service ace by Rachael Scott to take an 8-4 lead. Tulane came back with a 3-1 run forcing the Miners to call a timeout. UTEP came out firing and Herrera hammered the ball giving the Miners a 14-12 lead. A kill by Horton ended the threat as the Miners took the match, 15-13.

The Miners return home to face Rice on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
