Hattiesburg, Miss. – The UTEP volleyball team moves to 4-2 in Conference USA and 10-7 overall as the Miners fall to Southern Miss, 0-3 (17-25, 20-25, 19-25) on Sunday.
Xitlali Herrera led UTEP’s offense as she hammered out a match high of 17 kills. The senior also delivered seven digs, two assists, and one block assist. Malia Patterson aided the offense as she secured 32 assists.
"Southern Mississippi played well and we didn't execute ur game effectively," head coach Holly Watts said. "We need to step up in every position on the court. We have to get back in the gym and get better this week. We have a big match next Sunday and we need our Miner fans to help Memorial Gym continue to be a home court advantage."
UTEP and Southern Miss opened the first set fighting point for point. The squads tied the score eight times until a 5-0 run gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Southern Miss sustained its lead and secured the first set off a kill by Jasmine Crowell.
The Orange and Blue improved its attack percentage (.250) in the second set, but six UTEP errors gave the set to the Golden Eagles.
UTEP took the lead in the third set with a 4-0 run but a Miner error sparked a 4-0 run for Southern Miss tying the score 6-6. The score would tie two more times before the Golden Eagles captured the lead. Ten more UTEP errors would give the match to Southern Miss.
The Miners will return to the court Sunday, Oct. 20 at 12 p.m. (MT) as they return to Memorial Gym to face off against Rice.
