Providence, R.I. - The UTEP volleyball team defeated Coppin State 3-0, (25-5, 25-17, 25-22), to open the Friars Classic at Mullaney Gymnasium on Friday night.
"We relaxed a little bit after the first set and that probably that resulted in us making errors in the next two sets," head coach Ken Murphy said. "I thought Aidan (Mooney) did a good job from the beginning to the end of the match. She created a lot of offense for us.
"I think we put a lot of good service pressure against them and that made it difficult for Coppin State to play in the match. That's something we can use to our advantage furtheron."
Aidan Mooney led all Miners with 11 kills and a .667 attack percentage. Sophomore Patty Jarmoc recorded seven serving aces, while Jennifer Nolasco added six against the Eagles.
The Miners took quick command of the match starting the first set 6-0 over Coppin State. UTEP combined for 13 kills and eight service asses to propel drive a 15-1 run and put the Eagles away 25-5.
Tied early in set number two, the Miners again took off on a five-point run to take the lead, but the Eagles would not go away as easy as they had in the first set. Leading, 18-17, UTEP used another seven-point run to put Coppin State away, 25-17, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Despite a persistent Coppin State team, UTEP put the Eagles away in three with a 25-22 win in set number three.
UTEP will return to Mullaney Gymnasium Saturday morning for a scheduled matchup against Sacred Heart scheduled for 11 a.m. The Miners will play a second game at 3 p.m. against host Providence College.
