UTEP Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to Baylor, 3-2

Beaumont, Texas - The UTEP volleyball team bolted out to a 2-1 set lead only to have Baylor claim the final two sets to post a 3-2 triumph at the MCM Elegante Invitational on Friday. The Miners won the first set (27-25) and third set (25-19) but the Bears managed to rally to take the second (25-19), fourth (25-22) and fifth sets (15-12).
UTEP came out and won the opening set, 27-25. Herrera led the way with five kills and two digs in the set. Logan added four kills, while senior libero Stephanie Figuero collected 10 digs. Torri Campbell led the Bears with six kills and three blocks. The Miners held Baylor to a .173 attack percentage in the set.
The Bears answered back in the second, tying the match with a 25-19 victory. Baylor out hit UTEP 0.2 to -0.026 and held Logan to just two kills.
UTEP went on to win the third set by six points, respectively. Herrera tallied two kills, eight digs and two block assists to lead the team. Setter Malia Patterson racked up 13 assists in the set.
Things looked promising for UTEP in the fourth set, with the Miners holding advantages of 7-3, 11-4 and 15-10. An unlucky sequence ensued, however, with three attack errors allowing Baylor to grab the lead at 16-18. The Bears ultimately prevailed in the set, 25-22.
UTEP took control early in the decisive set, as it led 4-1. UTEP continued to fight but fell short as Baylor found a way to hold on, however, with a kill by Campbell. The Miners tried to rally, but came up shy in the final set at 15-12.
The Miners will look to bounce back against Lamar, Saturday, Sept. 10 at 11:30 a.m. (MDT) in the second game of the MCM Elegante Invitational. UTEP will wrap up the two-day tournament against Mississippi State at 4:30 p.m.
