EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP volleyball team dropped their season opener, 3-1, to Butler University at the Sun Bowl Invitational at Memorial Gym on Friday night.
The Miners played an aggressive match falling 25-22 in the first set before taking the second set from the Bulldogs, 25-23. The teams traded the lead through the third set before Butler came out ahead, 25-22. UTEP could not match Butler's intensity at the night hitting .069 in the fourth set to drop the match 25-19.
Junior Catherine Chavez recorded the first double-double of the season tallying 14 kills and 13 digs. Fellow El Paso native Amy Sanders, also recorded 14 kills to lead all Miners in that category.
Daidre Mendenhall's also recorded a double-digit kill performance with 11, while registering a team-high eight blocks.
Two Miners, freshman outside hitter Marie-Therese Joyce and junior transfer KeAnne Langford made their debut in a UTEP uniform. Langford, a libero from Hutchinson Community College, recorded 14 digs, while Joyce had two aces in the match.
UTEP will return to Memorial Gym on Saturday when they take on New Jersey Institute of Technology at noon and Oral Roberts at 7 p.m.
