Miners Close Opening Weekend with Two Victories, Look to NM State
Aug. 28, 2010 UTEP vs. Gardner-Webb Box Score UTEP vs. Charleston Southern Box Score Charleston Southern Final Stats DURHAM, N.C. - The UTEP volleyball team improved to 4-1 in its opening weekend, garnering two victories on the final day of the Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball Tournament in Durham, N.C.
UTEP defeated Gardner-Web 3-1 and followed with its third sweep of the weekend, a 3-0 victory over Charleston Southern.
"We feel like we got a lot done this weekend," said head coach Ken Murphy. "There are parts of the game that we are executing very well and we are aware of a few things we need to improve."
The Miners finished with 105 kills on the day and hit a .299 clip while holding their opponents to 78 Ks and .164 hitting percentage.
Leading UTEP's charges were Melissa Toth and Bridget Logan who tallied 30 and 28 kills, respectively. Kyla Muela contributed 14 kills and Jackie Cason chipped in another 13. Jeane Horton and Patty Jarmoc also ended the day in double figures (12 and 10).
"I like the way our offense worked today," said Murphy. " I thought we passed well and that Patty did a great job of distributing the ball."
UTEP proved steady in the back row, with Toth and Stephanie Figueroa averaging over three digs per set. The two finished with 22 digs a piece, averaging 3.14 per frame.
Jarmoc registered 72 assists on the day to bring her weekend total to 161. The senior setter has 3,348 career assists and needs to dish out just 39 more helps to move into third-place in UTEP's all-time recordbook.
The Miners experience some close frames on the day, sending stanzas past the maximum 25 points needed for the win. UTEP defeated Gardner-Webb in the fourth set, 26-24, and took the second frame versus Charleston Southern to 27-25. It marked the sixth time this weekend the Miners registered a nail-biting set with the Miners coming out ahead four of six occasions.
"We gained a lot of experience in finishing off games and matches," said Murphy. "Our enthusiasm was great and we competed very well at the end of games."
UTEP will look to continue its momentum when it takes on I-10 rival NM State. The Aggies received votes in the Bison/AVCA Coaches Poll and finished the weekend 2-1 at the Florida State Invitational.
The Aggies will play host to CSU-Bakersfield before hosting the Miners in the first of two match-ups. UTEP welcomes NM State on Tues., Sept. 7.
"We are looking forward to getting back to practice this week and seeing if we can get a little better before taking on State," Murphy said. "We are excited about where we are but anxious to keep improving."
UTEP 3, Gardner-Webb 1
Logan recorded a match-high 17 kills and Toth chipped in 14 of her own, as UTEP defeated Gardner-Web, 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 26-24) on Saturday. UTEP won the first, third and fourth sets to capture the victory.
Logan's 17 Ks were a career-best for the sophomore, who also hit .484 (17-2-31) in the contest while contributing three blocks.
Muela led the Miners defensively at the net, tallying a match-high six blocks (one solo, five assists), contributing to the Miners' 12 total. Muela also posted seven kills and hit .545 in the contest.
Toth recorded her second double-double performance of the season with a match-high 14 digs and Figueroa also notched a double-digit dig performance with 12.
The Miners got off to a swift start, taking a 5-0 lead in the first set off of four Bulldog attack errors and an ace from UTEP's Victoria Valencia.
UTEP remained steady, leading by as many as eight points twice in the frame, including a 21-13 advantage off a kill by Logan. Cason closed out the set with a kill for the UTEP victory.
The Miners fell behind early in the second stanza as the as the Bulldogs ran away with a 10-1 lead to start the set.
UTEP began its climb back with a kill by Toth at 12-3. With Toth serving, the Miners utilized the opportunity and scored another four points to come within six at 13-7. But the damage was done and the Gardner-Webb won the second set, 25-19.
The Bulldogs took the first two points of the third frame, but a determined UTEP squad fought back and took advantage of an attack error by Melissa Richie to go ahead 9-4.
UTEP continued to stride, climbing to 18-12 off a kill from Toth with an assist from Jarmoc. Toth returned from a Bulldog timeout to notch an ace for the Miners.
UTEP had match point at 24-15 off a Logan attack. But a sideout later and GW rattled off five points to inch closer at 24-19. A kill from Horton off a dish from Jarmoc ended the frame.
The fourth set saw 10 ties and six lead changes, but in the end, UTEP prevailed.
Knotted at 4-4, the Runnin' Bulldogs scored five straight points to go up 9-4. UTEP called a timeout, which turned out to be an effective strategy and the Miners took control of the following possession.
The stanza continued to sway back-and-fourth in favor of both teams. Ahead 15-12, UTEP saw the tables turn, as Gardner-Webb rallied to an 18-15 lead off six consecutive points.
A kill by Toth ended the rally and the Miners began their attack. Tied at 22-22, the Miners took a 24-23 lead off a kill by Jarmoc. The Bulldogs' Laura Wilcox tied the set at 24-24 but in the end, back-to-back attack errors gave UTEP the thrilling victory.
UTEP 3, Charleston Southern 0 The only player in double-figures, Toth slammed a match-high 16 kills in UTEP's 3-0 sweep over Charleston Southern to close out the Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball Tournament.
The Miners tallied 51 kills and hit .349 for the match while holding the Buccaneers to a .208 clip including .033 in the first set.
Jarmoc added another 36 assists to her weekend tally to total 161 in UTEP's opening weekend, bringing her tally to 167, just 39 shy of third-place on UTEP's career charts.
Jarmoc finished the match with five kills and hit a team-best .667 in the outing.
The Miners wasted no time in their duel with the Bucs, as the Miners used two five-point runs in the set for the 25-13 victory.
The Buccaneers did not surrender as easily in the second frame, as the two teams kept with in two steps of each other the entire stanza.
Trailing 7-6, UTEP registered the largest lead of the frame at 10-7, rattling off four consecutive points off kills by Toth and Horton.
Charleston Southern fired back, tying the game at 11-11 off a kill by Amberie Trinder.
Knotted at 16, CSU held the advantage taking the 20-18 advantage off of another attack by Trinder.
A kill by Muela and an attack error by the Bucs' Amanda Hill tied the game 21-21. Logan utilized a set by Jarmoc, downing the ball for the 22-21 advantage for UTEP.
A Charleston Southern timeout later proved to be effective, as the Buccaneers stole the serve off a kill by Kayla Klinger.
The tied game at 23-23 was the last, as the Miners held the advantage from then on and won the frame off a set-and-kill blow by Jarmoc and Toth.
UTEP used the momentum in the third frame to finish off the Buccaneers. With a 1-0 start, the Miners never looked back, maintaining the lead the rest of the match for the 3-0 sweep.
