UTEP Tennis Notches Wins at UNM Fall Invitational

The UTEP women's tennis team continued play at the UNM Fall Invitational on Saturday in Albuquerque, with the Miners posting victories of both the singles and doubles variety.

Rebeca Calvillo and Gabi Vazquez teamed to capture the Cherry Doubles consolation championship, topping New Mexico's Michaela Oldani and Nikolina Grbac 8-5. Earlier in the day, they beat South Carolina's Josefin Andersson and Katerina Popova 8-4.

Calvillo and Martina Trierweiler each advanced to the Cherry Singles consolation final with straight-set wins. Calvillo slipped past Texas Tech's Sofya Malysheva 6-1, 6-4. Trierweiler knocked off New Mexico's Maria Sablina 6-3, 6-2. Calvillo will meet New Mexico's Sablina on Sunday, and Trierweiler will face Texas Tech's Malysheva.

Vazquez reached the consolation championship of the Silver Singles bracket with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Northern Arizona's Nicole Perez. She is matched up with South Carolina's Andersson on Sunday.

Dariya Abdrakhmanova moved on to the Black Singles consolation final, defeating New Mexico's Michaela Oldani 7-6, 6-3. She will face Northern Arizona's Jordan Denesick on Sunday.

Abdrakhmanova and Trierweiler were upended by New Mexico's Kristin Eggleston and Sablina, 8-1, in the Silver Doubles bracket. They were also beaten in the third place match by Utah's Natasha Smith and Lucia Kovarcikova, 8-2.

In the consolation finals of the Silver Doubles play-in bracket, UTEP's Maria LeBlond and Anastasiya Sylenko outlasted Western New Mexico's Ganna Tiurina and Ashley Newell, 8-2.

LeBlond was beaten by Utah's Kovarcikova, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Turquoise singles bracket.

Sylenko fell to Northern Arizona's Alice Walker, 6-1, 6-0, in the White Singles bracket. She will take on New Mexico's Sarah Khan on Sunday.
