UTEP Shows Promise on Day One in Las Cruces

Las Cruces, N.M. -- The UTEP tennis team opened the season at the NM State Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., on Friday morning with five Miners advancing in their respective brackets.

Dariya Adbrakhmanova was first on the court for the Miners in the White Singles Draw when she faced Rafaela Haegele of St. Edwards. Adbrakhmanova won the first match of her senior campaign 6-2, 6-3. She advances to the next round facing Tarleton State. 

Marie LeBlond also took her season-opening match against UT-Permian Basin's Ynez Sanchez with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Also, in the White bracket, Gabi Vazquez took a bye in the opening round and faces her Tarleton State opponent on Saturday.

"I am proud of the way the team competed today," first-year head coach Mark Roberts said. "It leaves me very excited as we are only scratching the surface of reaching our full potential."

Martina Trieweiler and Rebeca Calvillo both advance to the next round by topping their respective opponent in the opening round. Calvillo moves to the second round of competition in a 6-3, 6-3 match win over TSU's Karla Martinez. Trieweiler moves on to face Alice Pacaut of Northern Arizona after a bye in round one.

In the doubles bracket, Calvillo and Vazquez teamed up to beat the duo from TSU (8-5) and advance to Saturday's match against Abilene Christian. The next UTEP pair, Trieweiler and Adbrakhmanova, advance on a bye. LeBlond and Anastasiya Sylenko fell in their first doubles match of the season (8-6) against St. Edwards.

Sylenko fell in her season debut (1-6, 1-6) and NAU's Alice Walker bested in her consolation match 6-1, 6-0.



The Miners continue at NM State for day two of the Aggie Invitational, beginning at 9 a.m. (MT) and conclude the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 16.
