Miners Debut at Helm of Roberts at NM State

EL PASO, Texas--Head coach Mark Roberts and the UTEP Miners tennis team kicks off the 2012 season at the Aggie Invitational on Friday, Sept. 14, and wrap up Sunday, Sept. 16 in Las Cruces, N.M.

During the three-day tournament, UTEP is set to face host New Mexico State, Abilene Christian, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, St. Edward's, UT Arlington and UT Permian Basin. 

Roberts took the reins of the program in June of 2012 after being an assistant with the UNLV tennis program for four years. He is a former tennis player and coach of I-10 rival and host, NM State.

The Miners capped off the 2012 season with a 2-18 record overall, but saw success in their tournament run in the fall of 2011. Rebeca Calvillo led UTEP in singles play during the fall with a 6-3 record, while Dariya Abdrakhmanova finished tournament play with a 6-5 singles record. 

Calvillo and doubles partner Martina Trierweiler led the Miners throughout the season posting a 14-9 overall record, going 7-0 in tournament play.

The Aggie Invitational begins Friday at 9 a.m. (MT) with the first round of doubles play. Competition for the remainder of the tournament begins at 9 a.m. each day with the conclusion on Sunday afternoon.
