UTEP Tennis Inks Another Student-Athlete

EL PASO, Texas - UTEP women's tennis head coach Myriam Sopel announced on Wednesday that Valeriia Yanovska, a transfer from Taurida University (Ukraine) has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Miners beginning with the 2014-15 season.

The native of Donetsk, Ukraine will have four years of eligibility.

"I'm very excited to have Valeriia as a part of the Miner family," Sopel said. "She's very talented, hard-working and has a great personality. She will add a lot to this team, and I really look forward to start working with her."

Yanovska is the second student-athlete to sign a NLI under Sopel, and third overall recruit to sign with UTEP in the last year. Jeannez Daniel signed on May 7, while Lois Wagenvoort signed back in November.

This past February, Yanovska competed in singles and doubles action at the Donetsk City Cup, winning three singles matches in the qualifying bracket of the event. She defeated fellow Ukrainian Alexandra Chernishova, 6-4, 6-2, in the final qualifying match to advance to the main draw. Yanovska partnered with Diana Krasnova (Russia) in doubles competition, defeating Ukrainians Mariya Ivakhnenko and Alexandra Pisareva, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the qualifying final.

At the Trofeul D. Sturdza Cup in Chisinau, Moldova, Yanovska advanced to the round of 16 in February of 2013. Yanovska won all three qualifying matches, followed by a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Iulia Maria Ivascu (Romania) during the round of 32 in the main draw.
