UTEP Hosts Two Ranked C-USA Teams This Weekend
As if playing two conference teams on your home court wasn’t enough, the UTEP tennis team will be playing a pair of ranked Conference USA opponents at the El Paso Tennis Club this weekend.
On Friday, No. 52 SMU will play the Miners at 2 p.m. and on Saturday, it will be UTEP and No. 71 Houston at Noon. Admission is free to both matches.
It will mark the first time in four years and just the seventh time since 1991 that the Miners have hosted ranked teams on the same weekend.
UTEP (6-11, 1-1 C-USA) will be looking to snap a three-match slide where it has won just one match. The Miners are 3-3 at home this season.
SMU (12-5, 2-0 C-USA) has won five consecutive outings and is currently the highest of the three ranked C-USA teams. The Ponies lead the series, 10-4, and have won the last eight meetings.
Houston (14-3, 2-0 C-USA) is coming off a big 4-3 win over Tulsa last Sunday. The Cougars three losses have all come against school ranked in the top-50 at the time of the match. UH leads the series, 7-2, with a three-match win streak. The last time the Miners defeated the Cougars came in 2002 when UH came to El Paso ranked 64th. That was also the last time a UTEP team defeated a ranked school.
UTEP will conclude its home schedule next weekend when it plays host to New Mexico State on Friday, April 7 at 1:30 p.m.
