UTEP Tennis to Open Conference Play

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UTEP tennis team is set to take on Southern Miss on Friday (10:30 p.m. MT) and No. 32 Memphis (8:30 a.m. MT) on Saturday at The Racquet Club of Memphis.

The Miners (9-9, 0-0 C-USA) will face a Southern Miss (0-14, 0-3 C-USA) squad that has struggled to find a win in 2013. On the other side, the Orange and Blue will take on a Memphis squad (13-4, 1-0 C-USA) that is ranked in the top 75 in the nation.

UTEP is coming off a weekend where it fell to, then, No. 20 Texas Tech (currently ranked 18) and an Abilene Christian University squad that is ranked No. 3 in Division II.

Junior Rebeca Calvillo leads her squad with a 14-4 dual match singles record and is 10-2 at the No. 1 spot, while juniors Marie Leblond and Gabi Vazquez are both 12-6 in singles. LeBlond is 8-1 at the No. 4 spot and Vazquez is 7-2 on the No. 2 court. Senior Martina Trierweiler is 7-4 at the No. 2 spot. LeBlond and Vazquez have teamed up to post a 13-4 doubles record at the No. 2 spot.

The Tigers are deep in talent and have won 31 straight home matches including a 12-0 home mark in 2013. Courtney Collins is 11-5 in singles dual match play (10-5 at No. 1). Alyssa Hibberd is 12-2 (5-1 at No. 5), while Skylar Kuykendall is 13-2 (5-1 at No. 2). The Tigers have compiled a 72-23 team record in dual match singles play. Hibberd and Tiffany Welcher are 11-4 in doubles play (8-2 at No. 2).

The Golden Eagles’ Alexus Coats has a 5-7 dual match singles record (4-5 at No. 1).
