Tennis to Host Two Matches, Kids Day on Sunday

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team is set to host Tarleton State at the El Paso Tennis Club at 1 p.m. on Friday. The Miners (6-6) will then play host to Western New Mexico at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
The Miners have won three matches in a row, beating Illinois State, 6-1, Lamar, 4-2, and Colorado State, 4-3. The victories have come in the Sun City. Junior Rebeca Calvillo is 6-0 when playing at the No. 1 spot in singles play (10-2 overall). Marie Leblond has come up big the last two matches. The junior won the final match against Lamar’s Dariya Dashutina, 6-4, 7-6, and Colorado State’s Adriana Wojakowska, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Both victories decided the team outcome in favor of UTEP.
Junior Melanie Barnes has led the TexAnns (6-5) with a dual-match record of 7-3 in singles play and an 8-3 doubles record. Senior Karla Martinez is 7-4 in singles play with the same record in doubles. Tarleton State is coming off a victory over division II powerhouse, No. 12 Cameron, 5-4.
UTEP is set to host Campus Kids’ Day in conjunction with the UTSA. Kids are invited to come out on Sunday to watch the Miners’ tennis team take on Western New Mexico. Admission is free to all.
The event is designed to expose current and aspiring junior players to college tennis. There will be a meet and greet with the tennis squad, an autograph session. Free food and refreshments will be provided along with giveaways.
