UTEP Tennis to Play Three this Weekend

Senior Marie LeBlond has won five consecutive singles matches in dual-match play.

EL PASO, Texas - After playing a string of five home matches, the UTEP women's tennis team will begin a six-game road trip, starting in the Lone Star State.

The Miners (5-6, 2-0 Conference USA) will travel to Dallas, Texas to take on Sam Houston State (Feb. 28, 1 p.m. MT) and SMU (March 1, 2 p.m.). UTEP will then head to Denton, Texas to play conference foe No. 69 North Texas (March 2, 10 a.m.).

First-year head coach Myriam Sopel's squad is coming off a pair of victories over Conference USA foe Southern Miss and UTPB on Feb. 23.

Marie LeBlond has been blazing since starting the dual match season winless (0-6). The senior has won her last five matches. Seniors Rebeca Calvillo and Gabi Vazqeuz are also on a set of winning streaks - Calvillo has won five in a row at No. 1, while Vazquez has four consecutive victories.

In doubles action, Calvillo and Davina Meza are 7-2 at the No. 1 position in dual-match play. Vazquez and Matilda Rose Tech have experienced success since teaming up, forging an undefeated record (5-0).

Scouting the Opponents

Sam Houston State is currently 3-1. Olivia Battye is 2-1 in singles dual-match play at No.1 for the Bearkats. Maddie Mortimore and Kayla Stevenson are 2-0 in doubles action.

SMU, after opening the spring season ranked No. 52, are 1-8. The Mustangs have lost their last eight matches. Anna Kate Anderson leads the squad with a 5-3 mark, playing positions 2-5. Vaszilisza Bulgakova is 2-3 at the No. 1 spot. Macie Elliott and Yana Erkeeva are 4-3 in doubles action.

No. 69 North Texas (3-6, 0-1 C-USA) is coming off a 4-3 win over No. 52 Kansas State.
