UTEP Tennis to Host Home Matches
Feb. 20, 2014
EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP women’s tennis team will take on Abilene Christian at 9 a.m. MT on Saturday (Feb. 22) and will play a double header on Sunday (Feb. 23) – versus Southern Miss (9 a.m.) and UTPB (2 p.m.) at the El Paso Tennis Club. Free breakfast will be served before the Southern Miss match.
First-year head coach Myriam Sopel’s squad has won its first two home matches and is striving for more victories in the Sun City.
“Obviously we are looking to win,” Sopel said. “We are playing three good teams and it will be a lot of matches in two days. But the girls have been used to it and we’ve had a few weekends under our belt. They know what it is to compete at a high level and to deal with the pressure. I’ve seen a lot of team-bonding the last three weeks and the girls are getting closer to each other. It’s great to see hear them cheering each other on from court to court.”
The Miners (3-5) got off to a slow start, but have reeled in a pair of 6-1 victories – against Northern Arizona on Feb. 14 and Lamar on Feb. 16.
Senior Rebeca Calvillo is 4-4 in dual-match singles play, while winning her last three matches at the No. 1 position. Senior Marie LeBlond was off to a slow start, but has won her last two singles matches.
In doubles action, Calvillo and junior Davina Meza have teamed up to forge a 5-2 dual-match doubles record on the No. 1 court. Sopel mixed things up a bit as senior Gabi Vazquez and sophomore Matilda Rose Tench are 2-0 at the No. 3 spot, while senior Marie LeBlond and freshman Daphne Visscher are 2-0 at No. 2. LeBlond and Vazquez played doubles together last spring.
