EL PASO, Texas - After a rocky road start, the UTEP women's tennis team will open its home portion of the schedule against Northern Arizona on Valentine's Day (10 a.m. MT) and Lamar on Sunday (10 a.m.) at the El Paso Tennis Club.

First-year head coach Myriam Sopel will make her Sun City debut with the Miners (1-5).

"It's really exciting," Sopel said. "I'm looking forward to these two matches and it's going to be a good time. It's good to be home after traveling the last two weeks. We finally get our first matches at home and with our fans. And building a fan base - that's really exciting. I want to see the girls take advantage of the home court and getting home court advantage for the first time this season will help lift us up as a team."

The Miners went undefeated at the El Paso Tennis Club with a 6-0 mark in 2013, including a 43-23 home record since 2007.

UTEP pulled out a road win over Conference USA foe UTSA, 4-3, on Feb. 2, but fell to McNeese State (7-0), Texas State (5-2), Arizona (5-0), Grand Canyon (6-1) and Sacramento State (5-2).

"The girls put up a great fight and had great attitudes and they fought really hard to the last match point," Sopel said. "That's all we can ask as coaches. But right now we have to build on confidence and practice little important points here and there that make the difference in a set. We want to change the losses into a wins."

In singles action, seniors Rebeca Calvillo, Gabi Vazquez and junior Davina Meza are off to 2-4 dual match records. Freshman Daphne Visscher is 2-3, while senior Marie LeBlond and sophomore Matilda Rose Tench are still looking for their first victories of the spring season.

In doubles action, Calvillo and Meza are 3-2 at the no. 1 position.

UTEP will continue its home string against Abilene Christian on Feb. 22 (9 a.m.), and two matches on Feb. 23 against conference foe Southern Miss (9 a.m.) and UTPB (2 p.m.).
