UTEP Tennis to Play Three in Tucson

EL PASO, Texas - After notching its first win of 2014 against UTSA, the UTEP women's tennis team will travel to Tucson, Arizona to take on Arizona (Feb. 7, 2 p.m. MT), Grand Canyon (Feb. 8, 2 p.m.) and Sacramento State (Feb. 9, 10 a.m.) this weekend at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

The Miners (1-2, 1-0 Conference USA) fell to McNeese State (7-0) and Texas State (5-2) during Myriam Sopel's debut as head coach, but rebounded to beat conference foe UTSA (4-3) on Feb. 2 in San Antonio, Texas.

Freshman Daphne Visscher improved to 2-1 in dual-match singles play after defeating UTSA's Lina Hallgren, 6-2, 6-1. Seniors Rebeca Calvillo and Gabi Vazquez earned their first dual-match wins of the season, outmatching Jacobea Junger (6-4, 6-2) and Nicole Karaklis (6-3, 6-4), respectively.

Calvillo and junior Davina Meza won their first dual-match doubles match, along with senior Marie LeBlond and Vazquez.

Arizona remains undefeated (4-0) after defeating San Francisco 6-1 on Feb. 2. Grand Canyon has played one match thus far in 2014, losing to New Mexico 4-3 on January 31. Sacramento State (0-3) is still looking for its first victory of the season after falling to No. 55 Fresno Sate on Feb. 1.
