UTEP Tennis To Open Spring Season In The Bay Area

EL PASO - The UTEP Tennis team will start the 2013 season with a match against Dominican (Calif.) in San Francisco, Calif. tomorrow at 2 p.m. MT.  

"I am very excited for the spring season," first-year head coach Mark Roberts said. "We are all looking forward to a good weekend and I'm excited to watch the team compete."

The Miners continue their West Coast swing on Saturday at San Jose State at 1 p.m. MT and Sunday against San Francisco at 11 a.m. MT.

Roberts heads into the spring season with a solid roster led by seniors Dariya Abdrakhmanova and Martina Trierweiler. Abdrakhmanova finished third on the team in wins (14) during the 2011-12 season.

Juniors Marie LeBlond and Rebeca Calvillo both enjoyed success during their sophomore campaigns. LeBlond led the Miners in wins (21) and Calvillo finished second (15). Calvillo and Trierweiler led the orange and blue in doubles play posting a 14-9 overall record. Junior Gabi Vasquez and sophomore Anastasiya Sylenko round out the rest of the veterans.

Freshmen Jamie-Leigh Michau and Matilda Rose Tench complete the spring roster, as both will make their collegiate debuts this weekend.

The Miners closed out the fall season on a strong note capturing four victories at the UNM Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. LeBlond, Calvillo, Trierweiler and Abdrakhmanova all posted victories on the final day of the tournament.
