Nov. 7, 2009

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The UTEP tennis team continued play at the Southwest Collegiate Invite on the campus of the University of New Mexico Saturday.

In doubles, Marina DeLuca/Austin Lavallii downed Oldani/Shipperd in an exciting match. It went back and forth before the Miners’ tandem dug deep and prevailed, 9-7.

The Brazilian pairing of Carolina DeLuca/Martina Trierweiler came up on the short end of a match against Golovics/Suhajda (NAU) which had the identical score.

Alexandra Glebova/ Ximena Fuentes battled hard but it wasn’t enough as the duo fell, 8-3, to Wahinepio/Oki of Northern Arizona.

The final doubles’ match involving the Orange and Blue witnessed Carla Murguia/Veronika Makashov being tripped up by Eggleston/Durie from New Mexico, 8-3.

Action then switched to singles following a brief reprieve. Makashov got things going in the right way by downing Shipperd in a thrilling three set-match. She fell in the first set, 7-5, but rallied to take the final two sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.

Carolina DeLuca ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Landsman from Arizona, falling 6-2, 6-1.

Glebova squared off against Oki of Northern Arizona. She pushed her to the brink in the first set before Oki snuck by with the 7-5 triumph. The second set also went the way of Oki, by a count of 6-1.

Fuentes could never get on track in her tilt versus Wahinepio from Northern Arizona, dropping the match by a final score of 6-1, 6-0.

Lavallii looked good early on vs. McDevitt, storming to a 6-1 triumph in the first set. The sophomore couldn’t close the deal, though, with McDevitt securing the second set, 7-5. McDevitt also took the final set, doing so on the strength of a 6-1 score.

Murguia battled Cavan from Oregon, and was not able to get into a rhythm. She dropped the match, 6-1, 6-2.

The Miners will conclude play at the event on Sunday.
