UTEP Tennis Completes Weekend Invite

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UTEP women's tennis team wrapped up its fall schedule at the Lobo Fall Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.

Sophomore Matilda Rose Tench placed second in the Black Singles Bracket on Sunday. On day one, Tench defeated Claire Williams (Texas Tech), 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, followed by a day-two win over Jordan Denesick (Northern Arizona), 7-5, 7-6 (1), that advanced her to the championship match on Sunday. Tench faced Alexandra Petrzalkova (Grand Canyon University) in that final match but fell, 6-4, 6-1.

In the Cherry Singles Bracket, junior Davina Meza fell to Nuria Ormeno (Colorado), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the third place match while senior Rebeca Calvillo lost to Lizette Blankers (New Mexico), 7-5, 7-5, in the fifth place match.

On Saturday, Meza and Calvillo fared well in the Cherry Doubles Bracket. The duo placed third after defeating Michaela Bezdickova and Blankers (New Mexico), 8-7 (5). On day one, Calvillo and Meza handed Ormeno and Winde Janssens (Colorado) an 8-4 loss. On day two, Calvillo and Meza fell to the eventual doubles champions Sara Toti and Beatriz Santos (Texas Tech), 8-6.

Other notable matches, senior Marie LeBlond and freshman Daphne Visscher defeated Hailey Rochin and Olivia Headford (Northern Arizona), 8-5 in the seventh place match in the Cherry Doubles Bracket on Saturday. LeBlond also captured a singles win after taking down Rochin, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, in a Cherry Singles Bracket consolation match.

With the fall tournament season completed, UTEP will now prepare for the 2014 spring dual match season.
