The UTEP tennis team opened up play at the prestigious ITA Southwest Regional on the campus of TCU Thursday afternoon, with freshman Martina Trierweiler leading the way.

The native of Brazil stormed to a pair of straight set wins and is on the cusp of qualifying for the main draw at the highly-competitive event. She got things going with a 7-6, 6-4, dispatching of Texas State's Ellis. Trierweiler then trounced North Texas' Cruz, 6-1, 6-3. She will play at 8 a.m. MT on Friday, and can move into the main draw by coming up with a victory.
Vicky Michaud had aspirations of following in the footsteps of Treirweiler, and things looked good early on. The senior showed plenty of heart and determination in coming up with a thrilling three-set win against Louisiana Monroe's Burjali. After falling 7-5 in the opening set, Michaud bounced back to the tune of 6-3, 6-1. Unfortunately, Michaud ran into a buzzsaw in her second match of the day. She was dropped 6-4, 6-1 by Templeton of Big 12 foe Texas Tech.
Marina DeLuca was saddled with a setback in her first match of the event, but she did not go down without a fight. Squaring off against Texas Tech's Peana, the junior emerged victorious in the opening set at 6-2. Peana bounced back to notch the second set (6-4). In the decisive set, DeLuca fought hard only to come up just shy at 7-5.
She would find redemption, though, in consolation action. Battling Mackenzie from North Texas, DeLuca was on cruise control. She easily knocked off her foe in straight sets (6-2, 6-0).
Megan Pritchard was involved in two thrilling three-set matches, but came up just short in each of them. The senior locked up with ULL's Dangond, and sizzled early with a 6-2 victory in the initial set. Dangond found a way to claim the second set (7-5) before clinching the match with a 6-1 count in the final set.
In the back draw, Pritchard jumped all over Mathis of SEC power LSU in the first set (6-1). Mathis managed to secure the second set at 6-4. In the super tiebreaker, Mathis edged Pritchard (10-8).
Ximena Fuentes christened her tournament with a hard-fought setback at the hands of UTSA's Dedering. The sophomore was edged, 6-4, 6-4. She also fell in consolation action (6-2, 6-4) to Houston's Starratt, but that match was closely contested throughout.
The Orange and Blue played extremely well in doubles action, coming up with wins in two of their three matches. DeLuca/Fuentes worked over ULM's Makhanya/Satge, 8-4, while Weronika Bloczynska/Trierweiler secured an impressive 8-5 victory vs. UTA's Hadvigerova/Jagosova.
Michaud/Pritchard battled hard but were tripped up by the Red Raiders' tandem of Garland/Van der Drift, 8-2.
