WACO, Texas – The UTEP Miners wrapped up the final day at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships on Sunday with Rebeca Calvillo and Gabi Vazquez teaming up to win two doubles matches in Waco, Texas.
The duo powered through two rounds of doubles play, taking UTSA's Natalie Hand and Kavya Menon, 8-2, and then continuing on the winning path to down Madeline Mortimore and Kayla Stevenson of Sam Houston State, 8-2. The pair from SHSU defeated UTEP's own Martina Trieweiler and Dariya Adbrakhmanova (8-6) in order to face Calvillo and Vazquez.
Marie LeBlond and Anastasiya Sylenko were defeated in their consolation round after a bye in round three. The Miners duo was bested by Rachel Baldree and Berenice Van Bergh of Texas State, 8-2, knocking them out of competition.
"This weekend was a great opportunity for our team to compete against some of the strongest teams in the country," first-year head coach Mark Roberts said. "We are improving with each match and are getting closer to playing at the level I know we are capable of."
In singles play, both Abdrakhmanova and Trieweiler were halted in their consolation matches. Abdrakhmanova went down 6-2; 6-3 to Texas' Annet Rabinovich. Trieweiler was also knocked off by No. 12 Kseniya Bardabush, 6-3; 6-1.
"The team fought hard this tournament and we are all excited to get back on the courts practicing this week to get ready for our next tournament in Albuquerque (N.M.). Then we'll have time to focus on preparing for our spring schedule," Roberts said.
The Miners head to Albuquerque for the New Mexico Invitational on November 2-4.
