WACO, Texas – The Miners tennis team showed improvement in singles play on day two of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships on Saturday, but were upended in doubles play in Waco, Texas.

Senior Martina Trierweiler and sophomore Dariya Abdrakhmanova each advanced in the individual consolation bracket after a challenging day one on Friday. Trierweiler powered through her second match of the tournament to defeat Berenice Van Bergh of Texas State (6-3; 6-4). Abdrakhmanova also came out on top of her consolation match versus UTSA’s Irene Gandara (4-6; 6-4; 10-3). Both Miners continue in their respective brackets on Sunday.

Miners Marie LeBlond and Anastasiya Sylenko each fell in their respective singles matches, to knock them out of tournament play. LeBlond fell 6-1; 6-4 to No. 10 Edyta Cieplucha and Sylenko was bested by Sofya Malysheva.

Doubles play proved to be more of a challenge for UTEP with all three duos coming up short in their bracket. LeBlond and Sylenko were stopped by No. 8 Elizabeth Begley and Lina Padegimaite 8-2. Abdrakhmanova and Trierweiler went down 8-3 to their pair from TCU, while Gabi Vazquez and Rebeca Calvillo were defeated 8-2 by their 3rd-ranked competition.
