Miners Struggle On Day One of ITA Regionals

WACO, Texas – Juniors Rebeca Calvillo and Gabi Vazquez each won their opening matches of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, but the Miners were unsuccessful in advancing past the round of 64 on Friday in Waco, Texas.
In her first match of the day, Calvillo defeated Sandra Burges from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. She came up short against 17th-ranked Elizabeth Ullathorne of Texas Tech in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Vazquez met a similar fate when she downed Texas State’s Mariana Perez 7-6(6); 6-3. It was No. 13 Simona Parajova of TCU that halted Vazquez’s chances of advancing when she took match two 6-2, 6-2.
In the round of 128, senior Dariya Abdrakhmanova fought a hard battle before being tripped up by Dionne Sanders of Houston 0-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Fellow senior Martina Trierweiler went down 6-0, 6-2 in the first round of play as well.
All three of the Miners’ doubles teams drew byes in round one of competition, but will compete on Saturday in hopes of advancing in the regional tournament. Calvillo and Vazquez will face a pair from Rice, while Trierweiler and Abdrakhmanova meet a duo from TCU.
Regional play will resume on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8 a.m., with one round of singles and doubles play, in addition to consolation doubles.
