UTEP Tennis Completes Final Day of Invite

TUCSON, Ariz. - The UTEP tennis team finished the final day of the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort.
In doubles action, senior Rebeca Calvillo and junior Davina Meza advanced to the Wildcat Championship Flight Finals where they fell to Laura Oldham and Susan McRann of Arizona, 9-7. Calvillo and Meza defeated Arizona's Akilah James and Lauren Marker, 8-5, in the second round followed by a third round victory over UTSA's Jacobea Junger and Daniela Garcia-Diaz on Saturday afternoon to advance to Sunday's finals.
"This was a great weekend of tennis for all of us," head coach Mark Roberts said. "We had a total of 56 matches and it allowed us great opportunity for valuable match play. All the girls fought hard over the weekend and I am very proud of the whole team's effort."
In singles action, Calvillo had advanced to the second round of the Wildcat Flight where she fell to the eventual champion James (Arizona), 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon. James won the flight by defeating Miriam Rosell-Canudas (UTSA), 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, on Sunday. Calvillo bounced back in the consolation finals as she took down Oldham (Arizona), 7-5, 6-0, on Sunday.
Meza notched a few wins on the singles side in the Wildcat Flight. The first came on Saturday where she outlasted Kristen Poei (Cal State Northridge), 5-7, 6-3, 10-7. Meza then took down Meghan Cassens (Iowa State), 6-1, 6-3, in the consolation finals.
"They all gained a lot of experience these last three days," Roberts said. "These types of weekends allow us opportunity to keep improving and grow as players."
Other Saturday notables
Sophomore Jamie Leigh-Michau teamed up with Miranda Poile (UTSA) to defeat Alexis Marquez and Leslie Chang (Cal State Northridge), 8-4. Junior Anastasiya Sylenko defeated Jutta Collet (Cal State Northridge), 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Matilda Rose Tench defeated Mari Taslagyn (Cal State Northridge), 2-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Up next for Miners
The Miners will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to compete in the ITA Regionals at TCU. The event will begin Thursday, Oct. 17 and run through Oct. 21.
