ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The UTEP tennis team was in top form on the second day of the St. Bonaventure Fall Classic Saturday afternoon. The Miners, challenging foes from Siena, posted a combined record of 11-1 on the day. The effort improves the Orange and Blue to 20-2 overall at the event (14-1 singles, 6-1 doubles). It was an impressive showing in singles, with seven of the eight triumphs coming via straight sets. Senior Carolina DeLuca was nearly flawless in dismantling Jessica Macaluso, 6-1, 6-0. Gabi Vazquez also only lost one game, taking down Danielle Crill by a final count of 6-0, 6-1. Also achieving the feat was Marie Leblond, who toppled Cassandra Braz, 6-0, 6-1. Rebeca Calvillo notched her initial singles triumph of the year by cruising past Carly Holloway, 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Tetiana Kovalska stayed undefeated early in her career after besting Brittany Filip, 6-0, 6-2. Top player Martina Trierweiler derailed, Jasleen Sandhu, 6-2, 6-4 while Dariya Abdrakhmanova downed Nicole Ross, 6-3, 6-1. Anastasiya Sylenko ensured a perfect mark on the day in singles play for the Orange and Blue with a come-from-behind victory against Elora Benfer. She lost the opening set, 4-6, but rallied to claim the second set, 6-4. A super tiebreaker was used in place of the third set, and Sylenko picked up the 1-0 (13-11) triumph. The Miners were solid in doubles play as well. Calvillo/Trierweiler rolled past Sandhu/Ross, 8-3, while DeLuca/Vazquez took out Holloway/Macaluso, 8-2.
Abdrakhmanova/LeBlond made quick work of Benfer/Filip, posting an 8-2 win. It was only for the effort of Crill/Braz, which snuck past Sylenko/Kovalska, 8-3, that prevented an undefeated day for UTEP.
