LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The UTEP women's tennis team won four of six doubles matches at day one of the NM State Aggie Invitational on a rainy Friday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center.

"We're excited and looking forward to tomorrow," head coach Mark Roberts said. We really played some hard-fought matches today. It's just too bad we got started late."

Senior Rebeca Calvillo teamed up with junior transfer Davina Meza to win two doubles matches. The pair took down Alicia Perez and Marina Rull from Tarleton State, 8-2, and won a nail-biter against Priscilla Annoual and Tumova from Grand Canyon, 9-8, in a tiebreaker in the Jemez Flight.

Another senior teamed up with a newcomer as Marie LeBlond paired up with freshman Daphne Visscher and claimed victory over Emily Conrad and Ansley Boarman from Abilene Christian, 8-4, in the Jemez Flight.

Miners saw more success as junior Anastasiya Sylenko and sophomore Matilda Rose Tench outmatched Marie Monier and Diamond Morill from Western New Mexico, 9-7.

Rain halted the 9 a.m. (MT) scheduled start time for the matches as matches finally began at 4:30 p.m.

Matches will resume play tomorrow at 9 a.m. and through Sunday afternoon.
