JONESBORO, Ark.– Martina Trierweiler and Dariya Abdrakhmanova each recorded straight set victories but the UTEP tennis team was upended by Southern Miss, 4-2, in the squad’s regular-season finale Saturday morning.

The Miners (2-17, 0-1 C-USA) were vying to build some momentum for the upcoming 2012 Conference USA Championships (April 19-22) only to come up just shy against the Golden Eagles (3-17, 0-1 C-USA).

The doubles portion of the match was not held, and action instead initiated with singles play. Trierweiler set a solid tone at the top position, waxing Alexus Coats, 7-5, 6-1.

Abdrakhmanova did her part as well by bouncing Moorea Williams, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5.

The balance of the match swung at No. 2 singles, where Rebeca Calvillo locked up with Elja van Berlo. USM’s van Berlo managed a 6-4 win in the first set but Calvillo bounced back in the second (5-7). She ran out of steam late, though, falling in the final set 6-1.

Gabi Vazquez squared off against Kate Lanier, and she could not get on track in a 6-1, 6-2, setback at No. 3 singles. Freshman Anastasiya Sylenko was saddled with a similar fate vs. Mackenzie Oskin in a 6-0, 6-2, defeat at the fourth position.

Marie LeBlond, who boasts a team-high 21 triumphs on the campaign, was cooled off by Alex Bradley, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.

UTEP will return to the Sun City and look to get in some quality practices prior to starting play at the league’s pinnacle event.
