UTEP Tennis Splits Double Header To Wrap Up Regular Season
April 9, 2011
MEMPHIS, TENN.- The UTEP tennis team wrapped up its 2011 regular season by splitting a double header on Saturday. The Miners (6-13, 1-3 C-USA) were held off by fellow Conference USA member Southern Miss, 5-2, in the first match of the day before bouncing back in a big way to wax Southern University, 6-0, only an hour-and-a half later.
Ximena Fuentes and Martina Trierweiler led the way for UTEP, with each registering a pair of wins during singles play. Dariya Abdrakhmanova, Rebeca Calvillo, Alexandra Glebova and Marie Leblond also got in on the act with triumphs in singles action against Southern University.
"We had a good competitive match against Southern Miss, and then the ladies stepped it up in the second match," UTEP head coach Victor Aguilar said. "Ximena Fuentes did a great job of leading us as a senior."
The first match of the day pitted the Miners against the Lady Eagles (7-12, 2-3 C-USA). Trieweiler/Calvillo got UTEP off to a good start in doubles play by toppling Vroni van Berlo/Alex Bradley, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. USM bounced back to secure the other matches, though, en route to staking the doubles point. Åsa Bengtson/Zoë Lee snuck past Vazquez/Fuentes, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles while the duo of Stephanie Dellocono/Elja van Berlo derailed Abdrakhmanova/Glebova, 8-3, at the second spot.
In singles play it was Fuentes and Trierweiler who tried to mount the UTEP rally. Both did so in convincing fashion, with the sophomore rolling to a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Vroni van Berlo at No. 1 singles. Fuentes, meanwhile, drilled Moorea Williams to the tune of 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6.
USM picked up the team triumph, though, as result of the outcomes on the other courts. Bengtson bested Vazquez, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 4 singles while Elja van Berlo snuck past Calvillo, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Lee downed Glebova, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5 singles.
The Miners didn't have much time to recover from the setback, but they did a great job in getting their mind straight heading into the match-up with Southern University. Due to it being the second match of the day, only the singles matches were played.
Trierweiler took out Carlista Mohammed, 6-1, 7-6, at No. 1 singles, but she was not the only Miner to register a straight-set triumph. Abdrakhmanova dismantled Demetria Woods, 6-2, 6-3. LeBlond was nearly flawless in a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Lisbeth Castaneda at No. 5 singles, and Glebova got past Jo'Vonna Gaines, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4.
Calvillo and Fuentes displayed a flair for the dramatic, with each posting come-from-behind wins. Calvillo's triumph came against Kathryn Curtis at No. 2 singles, with the final outcome checking in at 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Fuentes used the identical formula to record the victory vs. Lois Alexius at No. 6 singles.
The Miners will return to El Paso to begin preparations for the 2011 C-USA Championships, which will be held from April 21-24 in Orlando, Fla.
