EL PASO, TEXAS– Rebeca Calvillo, Gabi Vazquez and Marie LeBlond picked up wins but UTEP was held off by I-10 rival New Mexico State, 4-3, at the El Paso Tennis Club Wednesday afternoon. The Miners (2-12) looked sharp despite not having played since March 2 but ultimately were held off by the Aggies (7-4). It marks the fifth 4-3 setback on the season, showing just how close the Orange and Blue are to experiencing a solid campaign. Action initiated in doubles play where the visitors managed two secure the early edge thanks to winning two of three. Calvillo/Trierweiler did their part to lift the Orange and Blue by pounding Jodie Williams/Natalia Salum, 8-2, at the top spot. NM State struck back, though, with Manon Sylvain/Annemieke Witte sneaking past Vazquez/LeBlond, 9-8, at No. 2. Ginet Pinero/Ros-Polly Nguyen then doubled up Dariya Abdrakhmanova/Anastasiya Sylenko, 8-4. UTEP looked to bounce back in singles play, and things looked promising initially. LeBlond continued her stellar season by waxing Witte, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Her fifth straight victory lifts her to 19-6 overall, with a mark of 11-3 in dual-match play. Calvillo fell behind early against Van Der Ben, dropping the first set 2-6. She recovered nicely, though, to steamroll her foe, 6-3, 6-3, in the final two sets to take the triumph at No. 2 singles. Vazquez cruised past Pinero in the initial set 6-1, but dropped the second one by a count of 6-7. She regrouped and took care of business thanks to a 6-4 result in the last set. Abdrakhmanova was on the wrong end of a closely-contested match against Nguyen. Both sets went to tiebreakers, and each one ultimately went the way of the visitor to make it a 6-7, 6-7 loss. Trierweiler couldn’t get on track against Sylvain, and she was bounced by a final count of 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Salum took down Sylenko, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
