EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team took care of business on a sunny Sunday morning. The Miners (8-6) won their fifth match in row, in the Sun City, after they swept Western New Mexico, 7-0, at the El Paso Tennis Club.

Up next for the Orange and Blue is I-10 rival and head coach Mark Roberts’ alma mater, NM State.

“We’re looking forward to playing NMSU on Friday. It’s going to be a good match for us,” Roberts said. “Then we have a bunch of conference matches coming up. I feel like we’re in a good place right now with good chemistry. Everybody is playing well. We’re just looking forward to the second half of the season.”

Freshman Jamie-Leigh Michau got off the snide as she took care of Dena Irvin, 6-2, 6-0. The native of South Africa won for the first time since winning at Dominican University on Jan. 25. Matilda Rose Tench won her third straight match. The freshman claimed victory over Diamond Morrill, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. Sophomore Anastasiya Sylenko won her second match in a row, beating Davida Aragon, 6-0, 6-3.

Junior Rebeca Calvillo keeps winning on court No. 1 after she outmatched Ashely Newell, 6-2, 6-0, while juniors Gabi Vazquez and Marie Leblond handled their opponents with ease. Vazquez earned her first win on court No. 2 winning, 6-1, 6-0, over Claudia Osuna and LeBlond won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

The Miners will travel to Las Cruces to take on the Aggies at 5 p.m. MT on Friday.
