UTEP Tennis Runs Through Tarleton State

EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP tennis team won its fourth match in row after beating Tarleton State, 6-1, at the El Paso Tennis Club on a drizzly Friday afternoon. The Miners (7-6) improved to 4-0 in the Sun City.
The match was delayed twice during doubles play due to rain, but the Miners did not let the match slip away as they won the doubles point to take momentum away from the TexAnns (6-6).
Senior Martina Trierweiler and junior Rebeca Calvillo handled their doubles match, 8-3, over Karla Martinez and April Downing on the No. 1 court. Juniors Marie Leblond and Gabi Vazquez improved their 2013 doubles record to 9-3 after outplaying Ivana Zecevic and Melanie Barnes, 8-6.
Head coach Mark Roberts saw some improvement from a few of his younger players. Freshman Matilda Rose Tench won her second singles match in a row as she got past Marina Rull-Valdivieso, 6-4, 6-4. The Australian native improved her overall record to 4-7. Sophomore Anastasiya Sylenko won her first match of 2013. The Ukrainian outmatched Makenzie Mitchell, 6-3, 6-3.
Calvillo is still undefeated in dual match play at the No. 1 spot. The native of Durango won, 6-4, 6-2, over Zecevic improving her streak to seven wins (11-2 overall during the spring season). Vazquez beat Barnes, 6-0, 6-4, and improved her spring record to 9-4. LeBlond also notched her ninth win as she handled Silvia Nieva-Garcia, 6-0, 6-1.
The Miners will play host to Western New Mexico at 10 a.m. MT on Sunday. It will be UTEP's last home match until April 11, when they host Utah State.
