EL PASO, TEXAS– Marie LeBlond was once again in dominant form in posting a straight set victory while Gabi Vazquez joined her in the win column but UTEP was up-ended by visiting New Mexico, 5-2, at the El Paso Tennis Club Thursday afternoon. The Miners (2-10) looked solid early in doubles play where the tandem of Martina Trierweiler/Rebeca Calvillo trounced Alyssa Caffey/Maria Sablina, 8-4. The Lobos (5-2) managed to emerge victorious on the other courts, though, with Michaela Bezdickova/Susanna Kuuttila toppling LeBlond/Vazquez, 8-4, at No. 2 and Michaela Oldani/Nikolina Grbac snuck past Dariya Abdrakhmanova/Anastasiya Sylenko, 8-5. UTEP vied to regroup once singles play started, and things certainly looked promising. LeBlond crushed Richardson, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 while Vazquez fought hard to pull out a 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 come-from-behind triumph over Sablina at the third spot. The team rally would not come to fruition, but it was not for a lack of effort. Calvillo claimed the first set against Kuutila (6-3) but her foe struck back to grab the final two sets (6-3, 6-2) at No. 2. It was a similar story for Abdrakhmanova at No. 5, where she was ultimately bounced by Wookey, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5). Trierweiler could never get on track, and was bounced by Bezdickova, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. The Miners will look to rebound when they play host to Idaho at 1 p.m. MST Friday.
