EL PASO, TEXAS- Alexandra Glebova won her ninth straight match but visiting Kansas snuck past UTEP, 4-1, in a match shortened due to rain and wind at the El Paso Tennis Club Sunday morning. The setback is the first for the Miners (7-5) in almost a month, who had been in search of a school-record-setting eighth successive win.

“Kansas was a just a little bit stronger and mentally tougher than us today,” UTEP head coach Jamie Campbell said. “We have to regroup and get ready for New Mexico State.”

With the bad weather in the area, doubles play was omitted. Singles action commenced two hours later than scheduled, where Glebova was the standout for the Orange and Blue. She squared off against the Jayhawks’ (5-3) Kunigunda Dorn at No. 4 singles, and took care of business in straight sets. The junior-college transfer rolled to the triumph by a count of 7-5, 6-4.

Fellow newcomer Veronika Makashov also impressed, doing so at No. 6 singles against Victoria Khanevskaya. The freshman picked up the first-set win by a score of 7-5, and was tied (4-4) in the second when the match was halted due to the team outcome having been decided.

At No. 5 singles, junior Ximena Fuentes looked to be in good shape as she toppled Erin Wilbert, 6-3, in the opening set. The Big 12 player fought back, however, to stake a 6-1 triumph in the second set. She then clinched the match for KU on the strength of taking the decisive set by the same score.

Dariya Abdrakhmanova squared off vs. Ekaterina Morozova at No. 1 singles, and she could never quite get on track. The freshman was tripped up, 6-3, 6-3. Carolina DeLuca ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Sara Lazarevic at No. 2 singles, coming up shy 6-2, 6-2.

Her elder sister also was involved in a challenging contest. She battled Maria Martinez at No. 3 singles, but couldn’t get into a good rhythm. The visiting player snuck past her, 6-4, 6-1.

The Miners will return to action when they play host to I-10 foe New Mexico State at 1 p.m. MT on Wednesday.
