EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team, untraditionally, started with singles play against Lamar. The result was a 4-2 win at the El Paso Tennis Club Sunday morning.

The Miners (5-6) won their second consecutive home match after winning one last season in the Sun City.

“Great win today,” head coach Mark Roberts said. “The girls really had to step up and played well. Lamar is a good team. It feels great to win, and hopefully we can continue the momentum into next weekend. I’m very proud of our team for coming back from three close losses last weekend. It’s disheartening when you lose like that, but they came back fighting this weekend and won two good matches."

Rebeca Calvillo won her ninth singles match, while she remained undefeated at 5-0 when playing at the No. 1 spot. The junior defeated Carolina Salas, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Martina Trierweiler handled Alicia Porte, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 and is now 5-0 in singles play at that spot.

Junior Gabi Vazquez also won defeating Carolina Maso, 6-0, 6-4. But junior Marie Leblond was the deciding factor. The native of Montreal won her first set, 6-4, over Dariya Dashutina. Dashutina pushed the second set into a tie where LeBlond played an epic tiebreaker winning 12-10.

“Marie’s match could’ve gone either way, but she just kept fighting and found a way to win some of the big points,” Roberts said. “ She hit some great shots under pressure.”

The Miners continue their home stand when they face Colorado State at 9 a.m. MT on March 3.
