UTEP Tennis Wins First Home Match, Beats Illinois State, 6-1
Feb. 22, 2013
EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team won its first home match outplaying Illinois State, 6-1, on a breezy day at the El Paso Tennis Club Friday afternoon.
The Miners (4-6) won the doubles point for the third consecutive match. The previous two matches resulted in 4-3 losses, but this time the team overcame their singles play woes and downed the Redbirds (5-3).
“It was a great team effort today,” first-year head coach Mark Roberts said. “We all really fought hard, but there were a couple matches we could’ve easily lost. We continued to battle and found a way to win and it was an overall good win over a solid team. Hopefully we can take the momentum into Sunday.”
Senior Martina Trierweiler and junior Rebeca Calvillo started the day with a win over Emmie Marx and Kadi Ilves, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Marie Leblond and Gabi Vazquez, who have been consistent winning seven of nine doubles matches, won another Friday afternoon by beating Phyllis Tigges and Stefanie Youngberg, 9-8. The two juniors overcame an early deficit to tie the match and went on to win the tiebreaker 7-3.
After inconsistent singles play in previous matches, the Miners won five of six today. Most notably freshman Matilda Rose Tench won just her second singles match of the season. The native of Melbourne won convincingly over Gabby Phillips, 6-0, 6-2, that helped set the tone for the rest of the day. Vazquez and Trierweiler both won their singles matches handedly, but LeBlond and Calvillo played three sets each to overcome early struggles.
LeBlond fell behind Ilves, 6-2 in the first set, but won the next two 7-6, 6-2, while Calvillo finished the Miners’ first home appearance in 2013 with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
The Miners will play host to Lamar at 9 a.m. MT Sunday. Food and beverages will be provided before the match in conjunction with the National Girls and Women in Sports Day festivities.
