GREELEY, COLO.- UTEP claimed the doubles point and then received singles victories from Dariya Abdrakhmanova, Carolina DeLuca,Marie LeBlond and Martina Trierweiler, on the way to knocking off Northern Colorado, 5-2, to secure its first win of the season Saturday afternoon. The effort by the Miners (1-2) is especially impressive, considering the squad had completed a match against Denver a little more than 12 hours before taking to the courts against the Bears (1-1). UTEP looked no worse for the wear, though, as it jumped over the home side early by taking two of three matches in doubles to lock up the early 1-0 lead. Gabi Vazquez/Marie LeBlond derailed the duo of Jennifer Whateley/Adriana Nieto, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles while Dariya Abdrakhmanova/Anastasiya Sylenko took care of business, 8-5, against Jennifer Buchanan/Chrissie Hoolahan at the third slot. UNC's Stephanie Catlin/Elizabeth Tapia snuck past Martina Trierweiler/Carolina DeLuca, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles but it was a moot point due to the outcome on the other courts. Rather than relax with the 1-0 cushion heading into singles play, the Miners elevated their efforts. Trierweiler crushed Whateley, 6-0, 6-3, to set the tone at No. 1 singles. Abdrakhmanova was equally was effective in the match-up against Nieto in No. 4 singles, pouncing on her 6-2, 7-5. LeBlond dismantled Hoolahan, 7-6, 6-0, at No 6 while DeLuca also etched her name in the win column with a 7-5, 6-4 conquest against Buchanan at No. 3. Tapia snuck past Vazquez, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles and Catlin downed Sylenko, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 but it didn't matter in the end. UTEP will now be idle until it welcomes Northern Arizona to town in its home opener at 1 p.m. MST on Friday, Feb. 3. All Miner home matches are held at the El Paso Tennis Club, and admission is free.
