El Paso, Texas - The Miner softball team suffered two run-rule losses at the hands of UAB on Saturday at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. The Blazers posted victories of 11-3 (5) and 8-0 (5) on their way to a doubleheader sweep over UTEP.

UTEP fell to 13-33 overall and 2-18 in conference play on the season while UAB improved to 30-16  and 13-4 for the 2012 campaign.

Game One

Both teams were knotted at one after the first inning. The Blazers scored their run on a fielding error by Kayla Oranger at short in the top of the first with Colleen Hohman on the mound. UTEP scored after a bases loaded fielders choice off the bat of Chelsea Troupe led to Tahla Wade crossing the plate.

UTEP took the lead in the next stanza scoring two runs on a throwing error by the UAB catcher.

The Miners held on to the 3-1 lead until the UAB bats broke out for a 10 run 10 hit inning with two three-run long balls in the fifth inning.

UAB's two pitchers in the outing held UTEP to just one hit. Leah Streetman earned the victory with four shutout innings not allowing a hit in relief.

Hohman took the loss giving up eight runs and eight hits in 4.2 innings in the circle for UTEP.

Game Two

The Blazers struck first again the second game scoring one run on a sacrifice bunt in the second inning. A three-run big fly in the next frame by Mandy Lowman extended the UAB lead to 4-0 over the Miners. UAB tacked on a run in the fourth inning and put another run on the board with another homer off the bat of Lowman in the fifth. The Blazers scored two more to secure the five-inning victory.



Amber Torres pitched a complete game shutout tossing five innings allowing just six hits to six different Miners in the effort.

Joanna Krienitz allowed all eight runs on eight hits in her fourth loss of the season.

UTEP and UAB will wrap up the three game series on Sunday at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex at 11:00 a.m. Seniors Camilla Carrera, Chelsea Troupe, and Courtney Ware will be honored after the game.
