El Paso, Texas - UTEP opened a three game series against Marshall on Saturday with a doubleheader at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. The Miners lost game one 7-5 to the Thundering Herd and came up short with a 7-6 final in game two.

Game One

Marshall jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against the Miners scoring two runs off a single from Hope with runners on second and third. Marshall extended their lead in the next frame when they tacked on another two runs off of Joanna Krienitz.

Kayla Black pulled the Miners within one run after she hit a three run home run in the third inning. The big fly was the third of the season for Black.

The Thundering Herd scored a run in both fourth and fifth frames off of a pair of singles to extend their lead to 6-3 over UTEP.

The Miners rallied again bottom of the fifth plating two runs and cutting the Marshall lead to one. Tahla Wade lead off the inning with a triple and promptly scored on a wild pitch. Camilla Carrera walked and advanced to second after catcher's interference was called with Courtney Ware batting. Ashley Collazo drove Carrera home for the second run of the inning.

Marshall tacked on another run in the sixth inning to secure their 7-5 win.

Game Two

Marshall's bats continued to work scoring five early runs in the first three innings. The Herd took UTEP starter Cynthia Villastrigo for four runs, only one earned, off of three hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Chelsea Troupe broke the shutout with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning.  Carrera followed up Troupe's homer with a solo shot of her own. The duo sits one and two in the nation in home runs with Carrera having 22 and Troupe 14.

Marshall brought their seventh run to the plate in the sixth inning off of Laura Ramos.
UTEP attempted a rally scoring three in the bottom of the sixth but came up one run shy of tying the Herd. Kayla Oranger singled with the bases loaded driving in two runs. Ashley Collazo came home on a wild pitch in the same frame.

The Miners put the go-ahead run on base in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to bring another run across as Marshall picked up the victory.

UTEP and Marshall will face off for game three of the series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.
